Hard Corps, The San Diego Derby Dolls’ military themed and previously flat track team, have the honors of opening the San Diego Derby Dolls’ 2011 season Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, by going to war on the banked track with a more experienced authority, one of the LA Derby Dolls home teams, the Sirens.
This is the second time Hard Corps has fearlessly jumped on the banked track to skate against LA in front of their home crowd. Hard Corps spent most of 2010 travelling around the west coast playing flat track roller derby, but when San Diego hosted the national banked track roller derby tournament in June at the San Diego Fair, Hard Corps accepted the offer to compete in the tournament. Their first official game on the banked track in that tournament was against the LA Derby Dolls’ All- Star team, the Ri-Ettes. Hard Corps survived the game against the Ri-Ettes and even managed to put a couple of points on the board.
The Sirens are not the Ri-Ettes, however some of their skaters are, such as Amber Alert and V. Lee. Plus the Sirens have been playing a regular home season on the banked track for at least three years now in LA. But they also have a couple of rookies on their roster for this game.
Hard Corps gained a lot of experience as a team in 2010, playing most of their games on the road, learning to trust each other on and off the track, through the ups and downs of a first season for most of them.
Hard Corps captain PT Bruiser explains “Hard Corps started out the 2010 season almost exclusively made up of first season skaters. The talent was there, but the dynamics of playing roller derby…not so much. Then in the middle of the season we were dealt a double whammy of losing both our captain and co-captain within a one month period. That might send a lot of teams into a tail spin, but not these skaters.”
PT went on to boast that “with the passion they have for the game and the camaraderie they feel for one another, they not only held it together, they excelled. We may have been “outmatched” in skill and experience level in a lot of our games (last) season, but we never backed down to a challenge. Like the name says we are hard core and we will skate any one, any time, any surface.”
Hard Corps has mostly returning skaters from last year on their roster, with the addition of Ryder Hard who skated for LA last year. Hard Corps may be a flat track team, but a handful of Hard Corps skaters are also on the Swarm roster, one of San Diego’s home banked track teams.
