The Arizona shootings, in which Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was critically injured and others died, had nothing to do with Sarah Palin or politics in general. This was done by one lone young man who was not reality based on this earth. That is it, one young kid, who had what sounds like a psychotic break, and did this horrendous act. To blame anyone else for this is ludicrous. “Cross hairs and Sarah Palin” has been in the media for the last few days as a “possible” connection to this shooting? This is makes no sense.
The pain that the families of all the Arizona victims are experiencing right now was caused by the hand of Jared Loughner. His parents didn’t do this, Sarah Palin didn’t do this, the officials at his college had no hand in this, Jared Loughner acted alone in a state of mind that was not based in reality, by all accounts. To make this anymore than what it is, just perpetuates the tragedy.
We live in a country where the mentally ill have all the rights of anyone with a clean bill of mental health. This is a good thing because mental illness can strike anyone at anytime. The only time someone can step in and commit someone to a mental health facility is when they show evidence that they are a harm to themselves or others.
It cannot be conveyed to the courts in “feelings,” such as “I had a feeling Jared Loughner was going to shoot me when my back was turned at the blackboard,” as one of his professors stated. Or, “I sat by the classroom door with my pocketbook ready to go because I had a feeling Jared Loughner would bring a gun to school one day,” as a classmate tells Fox News. This is the way people felt, and for good reason it turns out, but they could not bring their feelings to court and have Jared Loughner committed. They would need evidence that he was going to do this. They would need to have heard him say he was going to shoot someone, or find a written note stating this.
According to Fox News, Jared Loughner had no political agenda, and as far as anyone could tell this was not about politics as it was about a fixation on a person who happened to be a politician. Jared Loughner asked Congresswoman a question at one of her political rally’s which made no sense, “what is government if words have no meaning.” A friend of Jared Loughner’s said that when Jared asked this nonsense question to the Congresswoman, he did not like her response. The friend, Brice Tierney, believes this one incident is why Jared had a grudge against the Congresswoman.
It might just be that Jared could have asked this same question to any politician he had access to, but he lived in Arizona near where the Congresswoman held her “Congress on the block” neighborhood get-together. If he lived in Connecticut, New York, or any other state, in his state of mind, he could have targeted any politician.
The politicians that are pointing fingers at politics, other politicians, and the community, the school, or looking any place else to find blame, should be ashamed of themselves. This is a tragic event, this was caused by one person and one person only.
