putting a wedge between them and their parents. Young people are revolting against their parents’ Christian religion. Young people are looking for a church they can call their own, and Satan smiles. Young people are different than all the other young people in other generations. Satan smiles. Young people need more than other generarions. Satan smiles. Young people need to start their own church or churches. Satan Smiles.
There was a young peoples’ “church meeting” trying to find out why the youth of today didn’t want to go to church. These were college-age kids, looking for the meaning of “God” and “church”. The article was interesting, but I wanted to include a few more thoughts into the discussion. It is not only young people revolting, it is all ages seeking their perfect “church”, and the reasons why they don’t go.
Could it be, we have coddled our children into thinking life is all about “them”. Listening to the excuses the young people gave, they were all selfish in nature. My advice to young, accountable, and responsible people – start reaching out and actually “do” something, and you can “fit in” at any age, anywhere you go. Once you are “doing” something, you automatically “fit in”. Try it, because it works! This admonishment is for (me) old people, too!
Another complaint from a student was, “No one says, “Hello”, to me at church.” Well, wah, wah, wah, here’s a towel to cry your eyes out! Why don’t you say, “Hello” first, if you want to hear, “Hello”? If it is not going the way, you want it to go, change it, or change you. This admonishment is for (me) old people, too!
One woman with a small child confided, she felt out of place with two-parent families. Sweetheart, your child needs spiritual food and evidently, you do too. God never offered a place where we will find people just like us…case-and-point, Heaven. Our guilt and sin will isolate us from God. Keep in mind we all are sinners, great and small, even the priest or minister. My advice, not to worry about the “attendees”, we are all guilty of some sort of sin, and or continual sin, in our lives. Who knows, you might meet Mr. Right, and turn your single-parent home into a “mom and dad” empire.
Satan knows how to inspire people, old and young, and make them rebel against God. Read my articles on Job. Job was a poor decision maker, but he was faithful to God! First, Satan alienates people from going to church. How often do we, do I hear, “There are hypocrites in church.”. I am so sick of this lame excuse! Be truthful and say you don’t want to go! The person, who uses this observation, is also a hypocrite. If they profess being a Christian and or Catholic, and they’re not in church, then your point is, you’re not a hypocrite? Well then, you may not be a hypocrite but you are a sinner. Of course, there are hypocrites, deadbeats, liars, thieves, fornicators, murderers, gossipers, and adulterers, whatever in church. There would be no need for church, if there were no sinners. Jesus’ resurrection and gift of grace would have been a moot point. Your excuse is not an excuse, but rather a lie. The truth is; you are rebelling against God and all that is holy!
Satan’s second weapon of mass destruction, “You don’t need to go to church. Why, you can have church service at home. Light a few candles, sing, read the bible, and pray.” Now, doesn’t that sound like Satan when he tempted Jesus in the wilderness? You and I both know the purpose of church and or Mass is to be inspired as a group, but more importantly, to take in the Body and Blood of Jesus. For my Protestants readers, it is your remembrance of the Lord’s Passion, when the church met on the first day of the week. Satan doesn’t want us in church. Satan doesn’t want us to take in or take on Jesus. If you take in Jesus, you stomp the serpent’s head! Satan doesn’t like to digest barrels of Bayer Aspirin.
Satan sings so softly in our ears. “Sleep my friend. You deserve it, after a hard week’s worth of work and study. You have chores to do, meals to cook and shopping. Oh, don’t forget the party at Mary Jo’s dorm. Johnny needs to finish his science project. Katie needs quality mommy time.” We need to better prioritize and organize our God-given time. If we cannot sneak in two hours a week for God, out of 168 hours in a week, well something is very wrong! I suggest we make a weekly date with our Savior. Everyone has some sort of “date night”. Keep it, honor it, savor it, and adore it. This is our earthly taste of Heaven. If you don’t like church, you will not like Heaven! These are the people, who have a head start to enter Heaven’s gate. At least these are the people, who are outwardly showing the need for God!
The next big lie Satan whispers in our ear, “there is no one here like you. You need to find another church. These people are old. These people are wealthy. These people are smart.” Okay, stop right there! Mass (church) is not all about “you”. Mass is not a social gathering. Mass is not demographically perfect to suit your needs. Mass is the called out, taking in the Body and Blood of Jesus. Remember, Mass is the sacrificial giving of our Lord’s life, graciously given for our daily sins. Therefore, you see, it is not all about “you” and what you think you need. It is all about Jesus! Who cares who attends Mass or church as long as we are there in body and spirit!
The last biggest lie Satan tells us, “These people are holy. Look at you! You are young, poor; struggling in life and how many beers did you have last night? Aren’t you gay? Did your husband find out about your affair? Are you getting an abortion? Didn’t you slap your wife this morning?” Satan whips us down and by doing so, controls us. Satan belittles us, and we eat it up. Excuse, excuse, excuse! How can we get better, if we don’t go to the doctor? Confess our sins and God is able and just to forgive us of our sins. However, the consequences of sin(s) are still there. Many sicknesses, addictions, are caused by the lack of acknowledging our sins. Seek out your parish priest or minister and they will introduce you to the one and only spiritual doctor, Jesus! Confession is good for the heart, soul, body, and mind.
Look at the supermarket shelves full of cereal. When I was a kid, there were about five choices, and one was sugar coated. We are a spoiled people! Americans are spoiled rotten! Moreover, we are religiously spoiled, looking for that very special church like it were a box of cereal. I want peanut butter flavored, coconut macaroon, round-waffle wafers with a maple syrup crunch, church. Wake up and smell the generic coffee because this can all be wiped out with one button. Our world, as we know it, could ignite like a fireball. I am talking about nuclear warfare. We are a spoiled, spoiled generation from one-minute old to 130 years old. We are spoiled by all the materialism, gizmos, and gadgets, Satan has to offer, which consumes our time and talent.
If you are not inspired at Mass or church, it’s you. Mass isn’t a circus of entertainment, with the priest or minister being the ringleader. The homily offers spiritual tidbits. The bible readings offer more tidbits. The singing is to burn zeal into our hearts to accept what is holy. NEVERTHELESS, it is up to us to “dine” on spiritual food. WE ARE SPIRITUALLY ACCOUNTABLE FOR OUR OWN SOULS! When was the last time you took an accounting of your soul?
The church offers free topical religion and or bible classes. Do we go? Oh, they will not understand me, because I am twenty and they are sixty. I couldn’t possibly be in a class with old people. Please…give me a better excuse. Giving, working and being a part of a spiritual team will fill the “I’m not inspired” excuse disease. I call it a disease because it will eat you up. It has eaten me up. If we strip all the attendees of their gender, wealth, age and schooling, we are all alike…sinners, finding our way to Heaven. That is the common denominator for all Christians in any and all churches! Our eyes are on Jesus, and Heaven! Nothing else matters! **When our eyes are on Jesus, this means we are working to promote goodness in our communities!*
For the gay people, Satan lays it on thick, keeping you from Mass and or church. Do you wear a gay sign? Honestly, you really have no idea how many gay people are sitting next to you on the pew. We are all sinners…so, what’s your point? I can guarantee you, there are married couples and heterosexuals sitting in the pews that refuse/or are unaware they need to get annulments from previous marriages, yet they receive communion in the Catholic churches. They are adulterers in God’s eyes. That is between them and God. For the Protestant churches, you are accountable for you. Sinners line the pews! Bottom line – use your talents in church. Homosexuals and heterosexuals will find, you fit in, no matter where you go.
We all need to draw near to the cross of Jesus. How lovely for God to see all His people together, worshipping, praying, singing, and receiving communion as a group of believers of all ages. As a people, we learn from each other. The youth have new ideas and the elders have tried and proven truths. Good old common sense is the foundation of a spiritual PHD. (Pure, Holy, Doctrine)
