Protecting your teeth can be one of the best ways to save money. You do so many things to adhere to frugal living but often we overlook your dental health. Health issues can arise if you neglect your mouth. Health care costs can positively ruin all your efforts to live frugally and save money. Even worse you could lose a tooth, or your heart health as a result of lack of care.
What you should know about beans:
If you love to eat beans and cornbread you also may have heard that you should sort your beans. This is so true, but most do not take this seriously. Check out this article which will visually show you what one woman found in a newly purchased bag of ‘Siler’s’ mixed beans
Be careful with sticky sweets!
One great way to be sure you don’t ruin your teeth is to be careful what you eat. Let’s face it. Some foods are just hard on your teeth. If you already have dental work, you should not eat sticky candy. When you eat hard candy for instance, the sticky sugars stick to your teeth, and go down in the crevices to start the process of making cavities.
Some fruits fit in this category as well. It is not good to eat raisins when you cannot brush your teeth within 30 minutes. They are sticky, and leave natural sugary film on your teeth. Although it is natural, it can begin to form plaque, and harm your teeth. Save raisins for when you are able to brush.
Know when to brush and when not to:
It is important to know when to brush, and when to wait. If you are eating or drinking highly acidic foods, it is best to wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth. The reason for this is, the acids soften the enamel on your teeth. If you go straight to brushing after this happens, odds are you will end up with weaker damaged teeth. So resist the urge to brush immediately. Some examples of high acid drinks are soda pop, citric juices like orange juice and grapefruit juice.
Choose the better tooth paste and save:
Your teeth are bombarded every second of the day by pollution, and acids in your food. To counteract this, and neutralize the acids that are destroying your enamel, brush with good old baking soda. For pennies a day you can brush your teeth with a superior toothpaste.
Recently, new information about Triclosan, an antibacterial agent found in toothpaste, as well as many household cleaners, and hand sanitizers, has alarmed the medical industry. Studies have shown it can “encourage extensive bacterial resistance to antibiotics”.
With so many ingredient being added to the products we use for our dental hygiene, this puts baking soda on the top of the list for a good, frugal alternative.
To use, just wet your toothbrush, and dab it in the nickel sized amount you put in the palm of your hand. This prevents germs getting into the box.
Choose to snack on raw vegetables, and watch your dental health improve. This not only helps you scrub your teeth naturally, keeping plaque at bay. You make saliva when you eat raw veggies. When you have enough saliva in your mouth, you have a healthier mouth. So go on reach for those carrot sticks or salted celery sticks.
Taking the time to be conscious of your teeth, will not only save your mouth but your heart health as well. Your heart is directly connected to your dental health. So be true to frugal living, and take to heart these simple ways to save money, and avoid costly health issues in the future.
