Let’s protect our Rock Lubbock! “Hey pull over, and please have your proof of insurance ready;” while the debate in the City Council over impounding the vehicles of drivers without proof of liability insurance is coming to a close. It’s also a good idea to have good copyright insurance. I’m overdue on mine, but they’re still treating me like a member.
Yes, you can be a one man band, manage yourself, make your own song your ringtone, produce your own CDs; but the one thing I think that you should never go it alone on, is your royalty and copyright. There are a lot of organizations out there willing to fight for you on this; but my favorite is The Songwriter’s Guild of America.
O.K. so you may have noticed that with family in poor health, and the poor economy (my trying to find more jobs on my computer) that I’ve been a little late on some of my writing, ie. The Eighth annual Big Twelve Trombone Conference Part 2. However, I’ve been late on other things as well; I’m especially talking about my dues to “The Guild;” but did that stop them from knowing me! I still have access to http://www.songwritersguild.com; and when I talked to them about my bill they said “Don’t worry about it we’ll send you a bill or you can pay online.” Most websites would like the words from the old “Mission Impossible,” “Disavow any knowledge of your existance” once you had gotten behind on your dues. But when it comes to fighting for your writes as a composer, do they have teeth?
The Songwriter’s Guild of America has gone up against the likes of Facebook, Google and Youtube and won. They have lobbyists working for you direct from Capitol Hill, and even keep you informed although you are overdue with your dues. They have main offices in Nashville, Los Angeles, and New York so not only can you find a main office in your region, but you can also find an office for your particular writing career ie. a simple song, scoring for film and television, or scoring for a “Broadway Musical,” And should you be doing the latter, I guarantee that copyright and royalty issues will be the last thing on your mind with sets, casting, meeting with the Director; and what about if you are going to direct the musicians yourself?
I was a “Gold Member” now that it’s time to pay my dues, I’ve noticed that the price has even gone down! So I’m thinking about paying the $4 extra to upgrade my status to “Platinum.”
The office for the Lubbock TX region is located in Nashville TN. Being from Buddy Holly’s hometown, and being casually aquainted with his family; I can tell you that rest assured that if you infringe on any of their copyrights including the copyrights of his legacy’s Sherry Holly, they have ways of finding you. With my being a member of The Songwriter’s Guild of America, I can confidently say, “So do I!;” especially once I get my dues current.
“Holy Health Care Reform, Batman.” “Good point Robin, old Chum;” they even have a Health Insurance Plan for Gold members and above. However, being on Social Security Disability Income- I couldn’t give you on honest answer about what it is like.
