With Spring in the air or if you live in El Paso, TX, Summer in the air, fitness enthusiasts should begin considering a change of scenery. It is time to shift your indoor cardio routines to a more pleasurable outdoor environment. Soak in the fresh air, breath deep, exhale and begin stretching for the morning or evening run. While the mornings might still be brisk in El Paso it is time to get the challenge of running on real pavement.
Running is not the only exercise that can be conducted outdoors. If you have a backyard, try to incorporate some of the simpler dumbbell routines to your outdoor environment. Lunges, Squats, Front and Side Lateral Raises are just a few weight training exercises that can be conducted in the privacy of your own residence and in the comforts of the outdoors.
If you are really looking to increase your cardio after your winter hibernation and get your body beach ready I would suggest this cardio routine. This routine can be conducted at any park especially favorable at UTEP. Lace up your cross trainers, bring that gallon of water and have your sweat towel ready for this cardio blast:
1 lap around track; normal pace;
1 set of stadiums; up then down;
back to field for lunges, 5 yard distance;
1 sets 25 pushups at that 5 yard marker;
Squat Jumps, 5 yard distance;
1 set 20 Leg Raises at 5 yard marker;
Suicides; 15 yard distance;
after suicides are complete, back to the 5 mile marker, 1 set of 25 push ups.
This is one set, no breaks until you have completed each of these exercises. You will get a 2 minute rest period, drink water and complete 2 more sets of this grueling routine. Upon completion you will cool down with 25 Jumping Jacks, then home for a relaxing cool bath or shower.
The above routine is just a sample of what can be done. Most high intensity cardio workouts, plyometrics or isometric routines can be conducted outdoors as well. The fresh air will be beneficial for your blood ensuring the oxygen rich content as it travels throughout your body.
Spring is also a great time to join a runners club, for example Run El Paso or even attend training classes at your gym that are conducted outdoors. Backstreet Gym has an outdoor fitness class with tire flipping and other high intensity routines. Lastly, ensure you have a high protein low carb diet or even try carb cycling to get the best results when increasing your cardio in the spring time. Enjoy the weather and stay hydrated!
