The granddaddy of sports shows kicks off in two short weeks. The Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show, sponsored by the Outdoor Channel and Comcast, starts its run Feb. 5-13 at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg.
The “Harrisburg show,” as it’s called here in the Lehigh Valley, has an exhaustive line-up of seminars, outfitters, exhibits, retailers and 300 new companies that were not at last year’s show.
Heading the list of seminar speakers is Michael Waddell, the “Bone Collector” as he’s been dubbed. Then there’s famed archer Chuck Adams, TV hunting personalities Lee & Tiffany Lakosky, Ralph & Vicky Cinaciarulo, Hank Parker, Babe Winkelman, Pat Reeves & Nicole Jones from Driven TV.
Aside from the TV who’s who, some lesser knowns are hunters Chris Brackett, The Benoit’s, Jim Benton, Eddie Salter. Steve Criner, Alan Probst (one of the best trappers in the county and former pro baseball player), Matt Morett (U.S. Open Turkey Calling Champ) and Joella Bates who is the first woman to take the Big 5 of Africa plus a turkey grand slam with a bow.
New this year will be U.S. Open Turkey Calling championship set for Feb. 12&13 and a Predator Calling contest on Feb. 7.
For handgun enthusiasts, the show will have a class on “Legal Heat, Conceal Carry Permit.”
Specific seminars include archery trick shooting with Chris Brackett, bow fishing with Corey Brossman (sponsored by Innerloc Broadheads), trout filleting and cooking, Kids Casting contest, Kids Trout Pond, Fishing Simulator, Trout fishing with Frank Nale, Deer Butchering with Chef Albert Wutsch, Sausage & Jerky making with Rick Fetrow and much more.
Randy Oiker will put on a trick-archery shooting demonstration while Campbell Cameras will do a “Filming Your Own Hunts” seminar that should really interest aspiring TV hunters. Lion County Supply will do dog training classes and Raptors Up Close will allow kids and show goers an opportunity to learn more about birds of prey.
Manufacturers at the show include such top brands as Mossberg, Savage Arms, Benelli, InnerLoc Broadheads, Secret Weapon Lure Company, Nosler Custom Gun’s. Lancaster County Marine/Hobie Kayaks, Benchmade Knives, Kodabow, Rocky Brook Sinker, Grumman Boats, Hoyt USA, Muddy Outdoors, Thompson/Center Arms, Quaker Boy, Summit Treestands, Gamo Airguns, Horton Crossbows, Excalibur Crossbows, Kinsey’s Outdoors, Lancaster Archery Supply, Weaknecht Archery and many more. I might add that most of the above manufacturer’s will be coming from the SHOT show in Vegas, and will undoubtedly show their new gun and hunting products they introduced there for 2011.
If you want to get a good bargain, attend the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers’ Association’s Annual Sportsmen’s Auction that benefits youth education. To date, POWA has raised over $335,000 with proceeds going to fund programs that introduce kids to the outdoors such as conservation camps, fishing derbies, shooting events and public school classes.
Highlights of the auction include the auctioning of a Smith & Wesson .460 caliber stainless steel revolver, Coleman canoe, paintings by Gerald Putt, hunting/fishing trips, tree stands, clothing, scents, game calls, decoys, optics, reloading and more. To save standing in line to buy show tickets, they can be purchased online at www.easternsportsshow.com, or at Cabelas (in Hamburg) who is the official retail sponsor of the show plus they have a sales booth at location 2401 in the North Hall. Driving directions and ticket prices can also be found on their website.
I probably missed something, but these are the major attractions and you’ll likely find more once you’re there.
