Home and Living welcomes Gretchen Schauffler. A truly inspiring creative force, Gretchen started Devine Color out of her Portland-area home—let’s talk to her and find out what it’s all about.
Q.: Gretchen, welcome to Home and Living. Talk to us about Devine Color, what it is and how it came to be.
G.: I needed ‘divine’ intervention if I was going to help people eliminate color indecision and painting risks. Devine Color is an innovative paint line with artistic color collections and paint sheens that make self-expression effortless! Each color was created and crafted around a relationship-based philosophy that makes the old, new, and gives you the true look it was meant to be. The colors never clash or go out of style.
Growing up in Puerto Rico and moving to the Pacific Northwest, color had a strong impact in my life. Leveraging my background in art therapy and graphic design, I began offering color consultation services. I was determined to provide instant color answers with the most beautiful hues; fabric-like paint sheens, and color tools, which gave customers a roadmap and help them envision how a paint color would look in their home.
Q.: What can you share about the entrepreneurial process?
G.: If you want answers, you find answers. I believe deep down that every entrepreneurial process requires two things: an incredible amount of curiosity and faith. One makes you ask the right questions and the other makes you go forward with your ideas based on those answers.
Q.: Can you explain where your goods come from?
G.: Devine Color is currently manufactured nationally by Valspar regionally in the northwest by Miller Paint.
Q.: Your paint is a thicker consistency, can you speak to that?
G.: Perhaps what is most intriguing about Devine Color is its unique, richness. It’s been a tradition in Puerto Rico—where I am from—to repaint your home every year. For the New Year, my grandfather would paint with a thick white paint. When I moved to the Unites States, I ate yogurt for the first time, instantly reminding me of the paint my grandfather used. When I was granted the wish to create my own paint, I knew I wanted it totally different than what was already available; I wanted paint that felt as yummy as it looked. Devine Color goes on like rich yogurt, and feels like chiffon.
Q.: Let’s talk about the sample boards, was that your brainchild?
G.: Devine Color offers the only handmade Finger-Daubed Paint Palettes in the industry. All of our palettes are made with the actual paint because I wanted people to be able to choose between true colors, and not mere representations, so that they’d know exactly what tone and texture they are getting. The palettes take the guesswork out of color selection by featuring complementary and contrasting hues. The real dollops of Devine Color paint help people understand how to coordinate the colors throughout their house and their lives.
“Devine Color goes on like rich yogurt, and feels like chiffon.”
Q.: What are some of the reasons that homeowners/contractors should think about doing business with you?
G.: Thrilled loyal customers not only continue to use our products, but they rehire those who introduce and use our products and become loyal customers.
Q.: Do you have an environmental mission?
G.: All Devine Color paints are Low-VOC, and in 2011 the entire line will be 0 VOC.
Q.: Is the economy helping your business to expand?
G.: Devine is doing well in this economy because more people are staying in their homes and want a change—Devine Color provides that, and provides online color consultation.
Q.: Where are customers going to find the products and do you have a website for more information? Is there also a blog?
G.: Devine Color paint, Mini Paint Pouches and Trend-Proof Palettes can all be purchased at www.devinecolor.com They are in select dealers throughout the Northwest, Ireland and the UK. Also on the website is my blog with a pound of color wisdom and a pinch of common sense.
Q.: Is there anything else you would like to tell Home and Living Readers?
G.: Our paint looks so delicious, you’ll want to taste-test it. We don’t recommend that, but it will make you a color connoisseur. We offer free shipping, too, so there’s no reason not to visit us at devinecolor.com and color your world right now!
