From the first minute after the bell tolled on New Year’s day, I have seen decorations and reminders that Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. Personally, I am a little shocked that people are subtly forgetting that Super Bowl Sunday is in fact an unofficial holiday for millions of dedicated football fans. There are rituals involved, a grand feast, and most of us spend the occasion with close friends, family, or significant others. Despite what you have planned in year’s past, take a different stand this year and try a few new things to help make your Super Bowl Sunday the optimal time for increasing bonds in your life:
1. Have your Super Bowl Party at one of the many sports books in town: Sports books add a level of excitement to any sporting event, The upside to enjoying the game at such a location is hearing cheers from the crowd around you, cocktail waitresses will be very attentive, and there are at least thirty different TV’s simultaneously streaming every sporting event you could ever wish to watch. Many of the sports books in town even have their own deli-style restaurants, such as in the Peppermill Casino or John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Sparks. The downside of these locations is that they can often become costly with buying drinks and food, smoking is permitted, and it will be crowded! If you and your friends decide to enjoy the game in one of these many areas, make sure to arrive early to grab a table, designate a driver home, and bring plenty of cash to tip the cocktail waitresses.
2. Backyard Super Bowl mini games: This year, invite you and 22 of your closest friends and family over for the game and pick Super Bowl sides to see who will win your back yard Super Bowl! Since the game doesn’t start until 2:30 pst, you’ll have plenty of time to play beforehand and increase the rivalry between teams as to who will win the actual Super Bowl. Getting outside and playing two-hand touch or flag football together will give you and your participants some great memories and laughs. It is not every year that our forecast here in Reno stays in the mid-40’s to upper 50’s for weeks in January, so make sure you take advantage of the beautiful weather and have some backyard fun!
3.Check out Allrecipes.com for cheap, easy food ideas: Everyone knows that people bond well over good food, so the Super Bowl is a great time to throw a potluck and enjoy a brew and bbq! Just ask your guests to contribute one menu item and you’ll have many different options to choose from. Pick a new recipe and cook together with your spouse, kids, or close friends, and this is a surefire way for you to create new memories and strengthen the bonds of your relationships.
There are thousands of different ways for you to enjoy Super Bowl Sunday with your loved ones, but trying something new always adds to the memories of the occasion. Even if you are in town alone and are unable to see friends and family, go out to one of the many bars in town and be around other excited fans. The energy and passion for the sport will surely help to elevate your mood-not to mention the halftime commercials are always a fan favorite! Whatever you decide to do this Super Bowl Sunday, make sure to designate a driver, call a cab, or find a place to stay. Have fun and stay safe, Reno!
