In a slew of seasons of “The Amazing Race,” this was the one that many people were waiting for. Season 18 brought back a number of teams we have come to know and love, and it did so under the title of “Unfinished Business” — none of these teams have won, and many of them left the show in extraordinary ways.
First of all, you have to give casting credit — most of these teams (outside of maybe Gary & Mallory and Amanda & Kris) are extremely memorable, but many of the others are either extremely likable or worth cheering for.
The first task
Unfortunately, some of the drama early on was hurt by some tragic circumstances. The show kicked off with a challenge to decide who would end up on the first flight — but due to a heart attack on the plane, the eight teams who were on the first plane ultimately ended up landing after the second-place finishers. Due to this, Amanda & Kris (who were given a U-Turn due to finishing this last), Kisha & Jen, and Gary & Mallory all managed to arrive in Sydney first.
As soon as everyone arrived, it was then quickly a challenge about seeing who could swim with the sharks — literally. Vyxsin was really the only person who struggled remarkably with the task, which involved finding a sort of compass baried on the aquarium floor.
The flag dilemma
From here, things really started to get interesting. Pre-show alliances from seasons past started to show, Flight Time & Big Easy were helped by Zev & Justin. In addition, new bonds formed as Ron & Christina decided to help out some other teams.
However, the three teams from the first flight still had their huge advantage. Gary & Mallory (the latter of whom being far quieter this season) were the first team to solve the clue, and completed the sailing challenge that followed quickly enough to be the top team. So the father / daughter team has the valuable Express Pass, which could be helpful since they have a history of struggling with directions. From here, most of the finishing lineup was predictable.
The twist? Everyone was still racing.
The fall of the cowboys?
The struggles of Vyxsin during the aquarium were nothing ultimately compared to what happened with Jet & Cord. The cowboys could not handle solving the flag challenge, and repeatedly failed at it time and time again with no one willing to stop by and help.
Ultimately, this episode was “to be continued” and we do not know the cowboys’ fate. However, we have to assume they will likely keep on racing for another week — and with the preview suggesting that Mel is going to break down physically, they could have a feasible shot at catching back up. (They better, since we picked the Cowboys to win the whole thing.)
What did you think of the premiere?
