Now that we are down to the final four ladies, it was time for Brad to visit each of their hometowns and meet their families. This will be a short article, because really, there just isn’t much to recap.
Chantal was up first, with her date in Seattle, Washington. First, Brad met her cats and her fluff ball tiny dog named Mocha and bonded. He’d have no problem inviting these pets into his loft in downtown Austin, but agreed that there isn’t enough closet space, and they’d probably need to move. After he’d spent enough time with Mocha, it was time to meet the rest of Chantal’s family – her mom, dad, and brother, who live in a gigantic mansion. He told them all about how she’d slapped him the moment she got out of the limo, Chantal talked to her dad alone, Brad talked to her dad alone and gained a new best friend, and Chantal cried to her mom. (It wouldn’t be an episode of The Bachelor without Chantal crying).
Next up was Ashley, from the middle of nowhere, in Maine. They went to a restaurant and shared a plate of gooey fries and learned that Brad doesn’t know what “Si” means (it’s yes in Spanish, you idiot). After they left the restaurant, Brad reminded Ashley that he loves the small town, and they took some pictures in front of the town sign – carefully shown to us by the cameramen that their camera was on a timer. No interference there! Northing too exciting happened at Ashley’s parents’ house – he talked to her dad, she talked to her mom, everyone was happy, happy, happy, and Brad headed out.
Shawntel made things interesting for Brad in Chico, California. She took him to the funeral home and gave him a nice, grand tour. Braddy boy got to see where people are cremated, he got to lay on the embalming table in the “prep room” and hear how Shawntel does her work, and she even showed him where she meets with families to plan the funerals with them. It was at that moment he told her he doesn’t handle death well. At that point, we knew the outlook was bleak for poor Shawntel. Regardless, she took him home to meet her mom, dad, and two sisters. When she took some time to talk to her dad, he was almost trying to guilt her into staying. In the meantime, Brad made her mom a drink, but in the end, all was well when the couple received Dad’s blessing. As Brad left, Shawntel told him she’s in love with him, and Brad stood there like a speechless fool. I understand he can’t say it back, but really. Let’s just spell it out for everyone that Shawntel’s not getting a rose this week, why don’t we?
Emily’s hometown date in North Carolina was the very last one. She was reunited with her daughter, Ricky, before Brad joined them and made things awkward. Ricky refused to come out from behind Emily, and when she did, she wouldn’t speak. Brad gave her a present, which turned out to be a butterfly kite, so the three of them flew the kite in the park. Then, the three of them went home to Emily’s gorgeous house and played board games. After Ricky went to bed, Emily told us that it was so nice to have someone else around with her and not be alone. All she wanted was a little make out time, only Brad went all soft on her and pulled this whole “respect for her and her daughter” card and wouldn’t kiss her. Back to things being awkward. This guy just makes awkward situations left and right. Finally, as he left, they kissed in the doorway for a while to make up for some lost time.
The Rose Ceremony was held in New York. Brad gave a short recap of each of the hometown dates and talked to Chris before getting down to business. He told the ladies he didn’t want to say good-bye to anyone, but he had to do it to get one step closer to finding a wife. He gave roses to Ashley, Emily, and Chantal, who were dressed for a Fourth of July party and obviously forgot to give Shawntel the memo, and she was sent home. Brad told her he didn’t feel the way a man should feel when a woman says she loves him. (Gee, ya don’t say?) After asking her questions and following them up with “do you mind?” three times, Shawntel finally climbed into the limo and gave the typical crying good-bye speech to the camera.
Next week, the gang is off to South Africa for some more intense and awkward dates. The end is near, and it will be very sad when the time comes that I can no longer pick on Brad. I’ll have to enjoy it while it lasts.
