With Valentine’s Day around the corner, a lot of people will do one of two things: go out and celebrate with a loved one, or hide in bed and wait for V-Day chocolate to be heavily discounted on the 15th. For those who fall into the second category, you are certainly not alone. Many a band has felt the same way, and have written some awesome songs about how love stinks.
Keep in mind that this list is far from being complete, but is definitely a good start towards making broken hearts feel a lot better.
Rise Against- “Blood To Bleed”
Rise Against are proof that you can play in a successful political punk band, but you can’t escape a broken heart. “Blood To Bleed” is raw with anger- it sounds like frontman Tim McIlrath’s heart is breaking as the song is being sung. It’s despairingly angry, and a catharsis for the band and the listener alike.
Alkaline Trio- “Radio”
Nothing quite says heartbreak like wanting someone to bathe with a still-plugged-in radio. “Radio” is full of images like that, making the song one of the best at describing the many emotions one may feel when love goes awry.
Blink-182- “Apple Shampoo”
While Blink-182’s second full-length, “Dude Ranch,” is full of fantastic tracks about heartbreak, “Apple Shampoo” stands out with images lines like, “I never wanted to hold you back /I just wanted to hold on.” The song encapsulates a relationship that has fallen apart, but hasn’t disintegrated because one party can’t let go.
Fenix TX- “All My Fault”
Sounding not at all surprised, “All My Fault” happily takes the blame for a failed relationship, without even questioning it. The relationship is over, might as well get past the fighting and get back to being upbeat.
Good Riddance- “Letters Home”
Leaving a loved one behind is always tough to do, especially when they move on and you haven’t. One of the most heartwrenching parts of the song is the idea that even with a broken heart, the narrator still writes home to that loved one, and continues to wait for them.
Taking Back Sunday- “Cute Without the E (Cut From the Team)”
Finding out that a loved one is cheating is a revelation that can sometimes change lives. Sounding like the event was mere moments earlier, frontman Adam Lazarra sounds appropriately wounded.
The Creepshow- “Going Down”
It’s hard to sound angrier than Sarah “Sin” Blackwood on this track. She tells someone exactly what she thinks of them, making this a song that not only can everyone relate to, but will have the brokenhearted singing along in no time.
Gob- “What To Do”
You always know that it’s a bad sign in a relationship when you no longer want to even hang out with the other person. Gob have captured that moment when two people are unable to reconcile their differences, and no longer care to even try.
Finch- “New Beginnings”
When one person ends a relationship, the other person sometimes finds themselves a little lost. “New Beginnings” finds a person starting over, and trying to get past the end of a failed relationship.
The Ataris- “Giving Up On Love”
From the band that has become popular from writing extensively about ending relationships, “Giving Up On Love” is the perfect upbeat song for the end of an affair. After all, after a failed relationship, many become determined to give up on love, and while they might not succeed, this song will definitely make them feel better the next time it happens.
While there is no sure cure for a broken heart, listening to breakup songs can help the healing process. In the very least, it might make hiding in bed on Valentine’s Day significantly more bearable. If there’s anything to be learned from these songs, it’s that when it comes to breakups, no one is ever really alone.
