Excitement is building in Flint for the February 7th premiere of Shawn Ryan’s (‘The Shield’) new series ‘The Chicago Code’. Local viewers who have seen the preview are looking forward to getting a glimpse inside the gritty world of a Chicago political machine. One crime drama enthusiast said, ‘Chicago is known for this sort of thing. Having a female in power to bust through and break down political corruption is a refreshing take on crime drama.’
Chicago has been plagued by all kinds of crime and political machines throughout the ages. In ‘The Chicago Code’ the dirty man in power is Alderman Ronin Gibbons, played by Delroy Lindo. He has placed veteran police officer Teresa Colvin in the highest ranking position possible, as superintendent. He thinks she will be there to do his bidding. What he doesn’t realize is that she will stop at nothing to bring him down.
Chicago also has a history of corrupt aldermen. Wikipedia reports Isaac ‘Ike’ Sims Carothers was a former alderman of the 29th ward on the far west side of the city of Chicago. He was elected in 1999 and resigned in 2010 after pleading guilty to a federal corruption charge. His father, William Carothers, was alderman of the 28th ward in 1980. While serving, Carothers and his assistant Ozzie Hutchins threatened to block a $14.5 million Bethany Hospital expansion unless they received $15,000 worth of remodelling in their ward office. Both were convicted in 1983.
Hollywood has been fascinated by Chicago crime, with films like ‘The Untouchables’, ‘Public Enemies’, and ‘Devil in the White City,’ providing snapshots of legendary criminals like Capone, Dillinger and World’s Fair serial killer Dr. H.H. Holmes.
‘The Chicago Code’ is a look at law enforcement trying to bust up current day political corruption and crime. It is shot in Chicago and its star, Jennifer Beals, is a Chicago native. The series is groundbreaking in the sense that it showcases Colvin, a female, as the highest ranking police officer in the force. All of Chicago’s 10,000 member police force report to her.
Jason Clarke stars alongside Beals as Detective Jarek Wysocki, Colvin’s ex-partner and man on the streets. Clarke has his own experience depicting a part of Chicago crime history in playing a Dillinger associate, Red Hamilton in ‘Public Enemies’. Adding local crime flavor will be an Irish thug, Liam Hennessey, played by Billy Lush.
‘The Chicago Code’ premieres in Flint on WSMH FOX66 on February 7th at 9 PM EST.
