The Santa Cruz Mountains winemakers are hosting a great wine and food tasting weekend January 15-16. Celebrate the friendliness and great wines of this close-by wine region.
On Saturday, January 15, you are invited to the Winter Passport Day. Passport is a great way to spend a pleasant spring day, cruising this extraordinary mountain appellation and enjoying fine wine, delicious food, and entertainment. Winter passport gives you the opportunity to visit the vineyards in their dormancy, seeing rows and rows of vines resting for the new year. In some cases you will see them being pruned. In the tasting room the winemakers are anxious to meet you and tell you all about their newly released vintages. Fifty wineries from A (Ahlgren) to Z (Zayante) welcome visitors to sample the wide variety of fine wines available in this rich winegrowing region. This event takes place from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Come back to the mountains on Sunday, January 16 for the Wine & Crab Taste Off. Local chefs are preparing delicious crab selections and pairing them with fine Santa Cruz Mountains wines. The event will be held at four famous Santa Cruz area restaurants, Paradise Beach Grille in Capitola, Café Cruz in Soquel, Ma Maison in Aptos and Sanderlings at Seascape Beach Resort in Aptos. Your ticket for $49 will get you the opportunity to taste two crab selections at two restaurants and wine tasting at all four. If you would like to taste crab at more than two locations, the cost is $16 per additional restaurant. This event takes place from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Santa Cruz Mountains wineries are spread over a large area from Half Moon Bay to Gilroy. With only 1500 acres of vineyards planted and over 70 wineries, many are small family-run operations handcrafting wines that maximize the potential for grapes grown in this area. It is famous for its Burgundian style grapes, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the cooler western side but the warmer lower elevation wineries on the eastern side are known for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Many of these wineries are only open to visitors on the four Passport days held each year making it a great opportunity to sample these wines.
Tickets are $40 for Passport, $49 for the Wine & Crab Taste Off, or $74 for the combination of both.
