From movie stars to housewives, women are getting hooked on scouting out and purchasing vintage clothing. Lindsay Lohan was spotted in New York and Los Angeles, checking out the latest trends. From the Rue La La Boutique to the Mad Vintage Couture shop on 87thStreet, you’re liable to find just what your heart desires and more. However, Alice Underground is the largest vintage store in the city. There you can find Dolce & Gabana Italian designers going through racks and bins in search for inspiration for a new collection.
Some of the priceless items found are embroidered cashmere sweaters, an authentic pea coat, and vintage jeans with embroidered pockets. You might find bomber jackets with faux fur collars, exotic straw hats and a sleeveless form fitting lace dress. There are fifties and sixties T-shirts with emblems, and jeweled neckline sweaters. I saw a long red string suede vest just like the one I had in high school in the early seventies.
Also in demand are chiffon balloon-sleeved A-line dresses, and form-fitting sleeveless lace dresses. A green satin and tulle gown demanded a second look as it hung in a swank-like manner on a handsome mannequin. A black wool A-line dress with a wide matching belt also got plenty of attention.
The hot items were the wedding dresses. A few were Amish. One could find a perfect gown and have it hemmed for a red carpet event or a special night out.
What’s special about New York vintage stores is that the men enjoy the vintage selections almost as much as the women do. They are especially into the custom suits with excellent fabric, the handmade and designer shoes. These shoes were made to last for decades. A good shine on a pair of wing tips and you’re definitely ready for high fashion.
The vintage shops in Los Angeles are a little different from the shops in New York. From Luxe De Ville on Sunset Boulevard to revamp on Broadway, the men and women still scurry for a good bargain. But what they are searching for is somewhat different. You might see someone picking up a Smurf sweatshirt and clothing, or a Los Angeles Rams T-shirt. Also in demand are the Los Angeles Lakers vintage starter warm-up jackets.
Of particular interest was a pair of thigh high gold boots, white short shorts, a white blouse and wide gold belt. The outfit screamed vintage pizzazz.
You can also find black and white Converse gym shoes and acid washed jeans. A piano striped leather purse was a to die for item, too. Then comes the original flower power dresses and scarves of the seventies, along with every color of hot pants imaginable. Empire waist dresses and a red sheered layered dress were also some of the hot items for sale.
And like New York, they have the most beautiful wedding dresses. There is a section dedicated just for wedding dresses and it doesn’t disappoint. Even the veils are works of art.
