As sat in a snowed in house today, I did one thing. That one thing I was analyzing was indie games and the current market for them.
Go to Steam and you see a market that blends retail games, discounted games and indie games selling in the same stores. Going into Xbox live and PSN, you will see all indie games are given a home, even though both companies advertise indie games differently. Xbox Live gives indie developers there own marketplace, tools and more while being extremely accesible. PSN helps the big indie games get light while Sony helps give them more profit but the company gets no helping hand by Sony.
As I was analyzing Detroits game companies, most very small but looking into the indie market, and looking at the rise of indie games, it hit me.
Independent games as its called are games by small companies that do not have the investors, the publishers, the budgets, the pedigree and usually the experience. But nowadays, they are looked at with the crowd of retail games.
Minecraft recently has grown hugely as one of the biggest indie games ever. Minecraft, however, was made by one man, who was learning as he was going.
One of the games I have reviewed, Team Meat’s Super Meat Boy, is another example of a indie game by a very small number of developers. Team Meat’s team is filled with people that are only experienced as Flash Game Developers, which is a fine line between making a small free game to a larger little cost game.
Most of the game companies who are going the path of indie games in Detriot or Michigan are gaining as they go. It is easier to make a app for the Andriod platform or the iOS platform, or making a Indie game with a small budget then opening up a big new company even if you have a huge focus and huge backing as a experienced game developer.
Minecraft has outselled most retail games, has acquired a huge audience that many MMO’s havent even acquired, and Minecraft alone caused the one man who made it into making a small team that is growing just because of this one sole game.
MOJANG, the crew behind Minecraft currently, is a self owned company because of Minecraft. But the best of all is that Minecraft is still in its Beta Stage, not even a completed version yet. Still being tweaked, still having additions added. But since its a big playbox that the developers are still building to and adding, more fans get into the sandbox and utilize those assests to create a living world inside a virtual indie game.
Minecraft videos alone make up most popular Machinima’s on youtube over the insanely popular Call of Duty series and Halo series known for its library of machinima creations.
Indie game developers who have played with free flash game are growing on the Iphone as well. Most big flash games are making a home on the Iphone with the same game with a little more alotted features at a very tiny 1 dollar mark.
However these very small and simple games have hit home with IPhone users and are creating a world where apps are categorized with downloadable games and indie games.
We are living in a world where almost anyone who is ambitious enough can make a compelling game.
