If you love Americana and would like to return to a “simpler time,” Tiffy’s Family Restaurant serves up nostalgia that may transport you back. As soon as you walk in, you will notice to your right the candy bins and homemade ice cream counter. Straight back will take you to a typical coffee shop counter complete with the padded high-back stools.
The rest of Tiffy’s Family Restaurant’s fascinating décor continues the theme of an old fashioned ice cream shop, complete with homemade ice cream. They have a couple recessed ceilings with colored ‘glass’ panels. There’s a player piano set up to take coins. This restaurant is just across the street from Disneyland so you will find lots of small souvenirs and cards too.
Although we would like to have ordered breakfast, we arrived after 11:30 AM, which is when Tiffy’s changes to the lunch/dinner menu, so while we read the menu, I ordered my fresh brewed iced tea. Tiffy’s is a breakfast restaurant, just not a breakfast for dinner restaurant.
The San Franciscan $9.49
Dorothy ordered The San Franciscan hamburger, a “juicy ½ pound charbroiled burger served on grilled Parmesan sourdough bread with 1000 Island dressing, grilled onions, tomato slices and melted American cheeses.” She had a choice of potato salad, cole slaw or fries. Although the hamburger wasn’t “juicy” because it was well done, she enjoyed it and the Parmesan sourdough bread. I even used a little of her 100 Island dressing on a portion of my salad. We’ll try a different side order next time as we did not care for her cole slaw.
Greek Chicken Salad, $10.49
My Greek Chicken Salad was very good. It was supposed to be “Lightly seasoned, grilled chicken breast mounded on a bed of fresh salad greens tossed with traditional Greek dressing.” The minor issue we had with it was that Romaine lettuce is not what we expect for “fresh salad greens.” Tiffy’s Family Restaurant adds cucumbers, tomatoes, Kalamata olives and red onions to their Greek Chicken Salad then tops it all with feta cheese. I know you’ve heard me say that I generally avoid cheese. Feta is an exception that I seem to tolerate. I did, however, pass on the choice of cornbread, dinner roll or pita bread. The chicken breast was really good. The Greek dressing was good, with a mild hint of vinegar with the olive oil. If you like red onions, you would have enjoyed my salad as I had an abundance. Overall, I enjoyed it.
While our meals were good, it’s on their desserts that Tiffy’s Family Restaurant / Ice Cream Parlor excels. Dorothy tried the ice cream and raved about how incredibly delicious it was. The fruit was fresh, not previously frozen. She had chunks of pineapple and coconut plus real strawberries and bananas to flavor the ice creams she sampled. Tiffy’s homemade ice cream was rich, creamy, and full of fruit flavor.
We felt that our server, Ana, did a good job of taking care of us. In addition, the young woman on the ice cream counter was really exceptional. She was friendly and helpful, even offering samples of the ice cream, which she really believed in. The ice cream freezers here were common to ice cream parlours.
All in all, Tiffy’s Family Restaurant serves up nostalgia with their food. And, when you’re trying to keep your costs down on a trip to Disneyland while still enjoying table service, you’ll find Tiffys a good choice. Their prices typical of a coffee shop. The food has comparable taste also to a coffee shop. They do, however, excel on their homemade ice cream. The service was good to great. We enjoyed the pleasant atmosphere of an old time ice cream parlor.
