Anyone in Bakersfield can agree that they have seen colder winters. In fact when we look back on our meteorological events this winter, only a few events really call for second thought. Still, there is no denying that the damp chill in the morning air can make the warmest jacket feel paper thin. So before you catch a cold waiting for the car to warm up, take a look at these tips for making the chilly mornings easier to cope with.
First, always wear an undershirt if you are going to be in the elements longer than 30 minutes. Although it seems like a simple common suggestion, i promise that extra layer hugging you tightly will serve you well. Most undershirts are tighter than your other clothing items, and therefore will keep the body heat you have close to you.
Another helpful idea is something you can do before going to bed every night. If you dont keep your vehicle in a garage, try putting a towel over your windshield every night, especially when the overnight temperature will be below freezing. This quick and easy action can keep you from scraping off ice or waiting for the defroster when you get in the car. Trust me, its worth it.
Finally, if you can spare the extra gas, try to start the car and run the heater 5 or 10 minutes before you have to leave. I obviously dont advise you to leave your unattended vehicle vulnerable if you live in a “less than crime free” neighborhood. However if you happen to be parked in a garage, or a gated community, or anywhere else where you dont worry about car theft, this can take that bitter edge off of the average morning.
Remember to always check your local forecast and make sure you are dressed and prepared for the weather, and always, stay warm, safe, and happy.
