The possibilities of proliferate expand with the 9/9 Golem generating artifact Titan Forge in Magic: The Gathering’s Mirrodin Besieged. The host piece that creates the tokens we saw a little bit ago, Titan Forge takes a little time (or a little proliferate) to get going, but shoots out monstrously huge creations.

T: Remove three charge counters from Titan Forge: Put a 9/9 colorless Golem artifact creature token onto the battlefield.
Titan Forge provides another outlet for the kitchen table proliferate deck loaded with Contagion Clasps, Engines, Lux Cannons, Everflowing Chalices, and Grand Architects. While getting this huge token generator going doesn’t seem too plausible in constructed, there’s every chance that you may have a little mana to play around with in Limited to get this masterpiece active.
Thrummingbird keeps looking better and better, as Mirrodin Besieged has provided plenty of outlets to go along with the ones found in Scars of Mirrodin. Although Titan Forge is mana intensive, it’s likely that once your first Golem has hit the field your opponent will be spending his time and resources dealing with it while you prepare it for another go.
The issue that arises with Titan Forge is much like the Lux Cannon – Sometimes it’s just going to be too slow, and with Titan Forge the problem is exacerbated by having to spend 3 mana a turn getting your Golem ready, while Lux Cannon is free once it’s on the field. Most infect decks can tear someone apart if they miss a beat, much less three turns of mana and another to let loose the big guy.
Titan Forge is a fun artifact to stick out and three and keep it around as a mana dump, but it’s unlikely you’ll be able to focus on it right away. Just lay it out and let it assist you with meeting metalcraft requirements, and if the game goes late or gets locked up, you’ll find yourself ahead by about 9/9.
Get your chance to play with Titan Forge at Mirrodin Besieged prerelease events, kicking off January 29th!
