Have you ever hesitated as you are throwing some items in the recycling bin, that you could be throwing away something useful? As you stare at that empty can or pill bottle, has the idea not struck you that you could craft a new toy or storage container? In these troubling economic times, saving money (and the environment), should always be first on our minds. Not to mention the amount of fun that is had from creating something useful or decorative.
Here are a few recyclables that come immediately to mind:
· Cans of all types
· Old Christmas and birthday cards
· Oatmeal containers of all sizes
· Pill bottles
· Paper towel and toilet paper rolls
· Plastic bags
· Old CD’s and cases
· Light bulbs
· Children’s game pieces
The list is endless. Once you have discovered your niche you will look at trash in a different light. Trash recycling sounds crazy, but it is true in the largest sense of the word. It is amazing what can be made from a tin can. There is no doubt that when you were a child that making a pencil holder out of a decorated soup can was in your art class repertoire.
Now that there are can openers available that literally allow the lid to be lifted off the can, closed containers are possible. Stackable tuna containers make perfect places for small objects. Decorate each can with scrapbooking papers and notions. Stack, and on the top stacked can lid, glue a small knob of some sort. Viola! You can also use Polymer Clay to cover each can with a ball of clay as the top can lid.
Now that the holidays are over, how about instead of throwing away all those lovely Christmas cards you received, recycling them into an adorable basket for next year’s cards. Here is an easy way to do that. You might like it so much that you make several to give as birthday gifts this year.
Cut one card into a round base shape. Make a template out of another card in any shape you want (octagon works best) You can then make small holes on the sides to connect all the pieces together with string or colored yarn to form the bowl. It’s an adorable gift that allows you to save those old cards. This can also be done in a square shape. Be creative and have fun!
Email your recycling craft ideas, and they can be posted on this page. Send your instructions or a link, and everyone can enjoy what you have to offer in recyclables. This can be a fun adventure when you look at items that are soon to be thrown away with the eye of an artist.
