Twitter is a valuable resource for posting information online in real time. Using a maximum of 140 characters (including spaces and punctuation), users can promote their websites, share news and photos, or communicate with friends. Many social media dashboards can link Facebook, Google Buzz, LinkedIn, and other accounts to Twitter for one-step updates. URL shorteners, such as bit.ly, allow for more text because the number of characters in the link is reduced. If a full-length blog post is required, Twitlonger.com and other cross-posting resources will provide a link to the rest of the message on an external website or break up the post into separate tweets.
The new version of Twitter has a slightly different layout than the old one, but operates in much the same way. The Help Center provides information on setting up an account, finding and following people, and how to post messages. Retweets (RT), “@” mentions, and hashtags (#) are additional details that will grab the attention of other users.
Here are a few a tips from the January edition of the Entireweb newsletter:
Do share links – to your website, your blog, your local news service, or anything else that interests your followers – this is a great way to get conversations going. But do remember to explain what the link’s about, or your followers will feel less inclined to click it. And don’t Tweet the same link over and over; people will quickly become bored and may stop following you.
Do retweet your friends’ links, too; they’ll be grateful, and so will your followers if the link is interesting and relevant. But here’s a very big ‘do’ – DO make sure you click the link and read the content before sharing it with your followers, or you could end up sharing a page that’s irrelevant or offensive, or which contradicts your usual position on the subject.
Utilizing applications, directories, and other marketing tools will help users gain followers, share personal preferences, and manage their businesses. Consistently posting interesting information may grant a listing as one of the Top Tweets. There are also benefits to following radio stations or entertainment sources, such as winning free tickets to a show or downloading free music. Social interaction with verified celebrities or getting involved in a charity can also make for a rewarding Twitter experience.
