This week’s The Dinner Party was Vampire Diaries chance to play a game of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? When Damon plans a dinner party there is bound to be trouble and this episode was no exception. From an unexpected guest, a murder, and an extremely late arrival, there was plenty of intrigue to go around.
The episode began with Elena reading the story of a dinner party in one of Johnathan Gilbert’s journals. He was dining with the Fells when they heard a noise outside. Because of the burning of the vampires at the church, they were confident in their safety and went outside to investigate. After taking down both Thomas and Honoria Fell, Johnathan fell victim to the vampire as well. But because of his ring, he was able to come back to life and identify his attacker in his journals. The “monster” that attacked him was none other than Stefan Salvatore.
Damon calls Stefan who is still at the lake house with Elena. He tells him that Tyler Lockwood has run away from home which means an ending to the werewolf chapter. That leaves them with killing Elijah. Stefan is concerned but Damon promises to be careful.
Yes, Stefan, I’ve become you. How tragic for both of us. Gotta run. Have a murder to plan. Busy day.
Jenna is taking Elijah on a tour of the founding family properties. He tells her that his research shows a group migrated to the area from Salem, Massachusetts almost two hundred years before any of the founding families came to the area. Alaric shows up, just as Jenna makes a comment about men being territorial. Elijah is interested in the freed slave property owners and Jenna goes to her car to get that information. Alaric reminds Elijah that Jenna is on Elena’s list of people that she cares about who should be protected. Elijah tells him not to worry and jokes with him.
You don’t have to be jealous. I don’t really pursue younger women.
Jeremy and Bonnie meet up at the grill. They’re both thinking about the previous night, but he’s thinking about their kiss and she’s thinking about the spell. He invites her over for that evening to get some practice in. Luka shows up and wants to know just what happened to him the day before. He isn’t buying Bonnie’s claims that she doesn’t know about anything out of the ordinary going on. When he presses her, Jeremy stands up for her and sends him on his way.
Stefan is still mad at Elena. She says they have a difference of opinions. Stefan says calling her plan to sacrifice herself to Klaus a difference of opinion is the understatement of the century. They discuss Johnathan Gilbert’s journals and Elena mentions there are things in there that Stefan has never told her about. He tells her that they were angry with the founding families back then for what they had done to Katherine and wanted revenge. He had no idea about Johnathan’s ring or that he would survive the attack. He says he was a monster back then.
Flashback to the Salvatore home. Stefan is feeding from a woman while a second woman plays the piano and two others dance around the room. When he finishes, he asks who wants to die next. The women begin to fight and Damon comes across the scene. He’s furious with Stefan. He can’t believe that he’s brought the women there when the whole town is searching for them. He compels the women to leave and never think of their place again. He tells Stefan that he’s leaving. Stefan begs him not to go and promises that he’ll do better. Damon says he’s going to get them killed and he’d rather leave Stefan to do that to himself.
Stefan tells Elena that he relished in being a vampire in the early days. He took it to as dark a place as possible. He felt guilty for what he’d done to their father and to his brother. The only way that he could survive was by turning his feelings off. Elena makes a very spot on statement.
It sounds like you were Damon.
Alaric, Damon and Andie are at the grill discussing Elijah. Alaric is concerned about Andie’s presence, but Damon assures him that she’s been compelled to keep his secrets. Damon and Andie’s overt show of affection is weird for Alaric. Jenna walks in with Elijah and Damon jests that she’s with her new boyfriend. Alaric starts to excuse himself. Andie suggests they have a dinner party and Damon volunteers to host.
Katherine is still in the tomb becoming emaciated. Damon visits her with a bottle of blood and some new clothes. He’s come to talk to her about his plan to kill Elijah. He tells her that John Gilbert is back in town and has given him a dagger and some oak ash. Katherine begs him not to kill Elijah before he releases her. Since he has compelled her to stay in the tomb, if he dies without releasing her, she’ll be stuck there forever. Damon doesn’t care. She assures him that she’ll stay and help him save Elena if he’ll help her get out. Damon has gotten the information that he wants and he leaves her there.
Stefan tells Elena that his need for blood ruled his life for weeks. No one caught on because of the war. It provided an endless, anonymous supply of blood. When he was feeding one night, he saw a woman in a cloak with one of the other soldiers and went after her. It was Alexia Branson, Lexi. She’d come to Mystic Falls because she heard it was a good place for vampires but she didn’t know they had all been massacred. She needed a place to stay so he took her home. She told him that he was the bad parts of being a vampire and they were going to change that. Talking about Lexi makes Stefan think about Damon killing her.
Alaric thinks the dinner party is a bad idea. He doesn’t like Elijah being in the same house as Jenna. Damon assures him that it’s nothing more than a fact-finding mission. He promises no sneak attacks, surprise plans or anything else that would put Jenna in danger. Alaric goes to help Jena with the wine and Damon prepares the dagger with the ash. He puts it on a tray with the drinks and tells Andie to suggest the men take their drinks in the study after dinner.
John Gilbert shows up at the door uninvited. He says when he heard that Jenna and Elijah were going to be at the dinner party he didn’t want to miss out on the fun and games. Despite Alaric’s and Damon’s assurances that there will be no fun and games, John makes himself at home.
Jenna tells Damon at dinner that Elijah says his family didn’t really found Mystic Falls. Elijah talks about the witches migrating there. According to lore there was a wave of anti-witch hysteria that broke out in a neighboring settlement. The residents accused of being witches were tied together and burned at the stake. Elijah is interested in finding the site of the alleged massacre.
Elena discovers in Johnathan’s journals that he researched the Originals and how to kill them. The wood from a single white oak was the only thing that could kill them, but the tree burned. The ashes were saved and witches forged a dagger that the ash could bond to. She wonders if the story could be true and Stefan tells her that John gave the dagger to Damon to kill Elijah. But there is something that John didn’t tell Damon…
It must be brandished by humans alone for it will bring death to all demons who wield it.
Stefan realizes that John is trying to kill Damon. He calls, but Damon’s phone is off. He tells Elena that Damon is planning to kill Elijah.
Damon and Elijah move to the study for after-dinner drinks. Damon cuts right to the chase.
So let me guess, in addition to the moonstone, the doppleganger, the lion, the witch and the wardrobe, you need to find this witch burial ground.
Elijah says that Damon’s right, but won’t elaborate on why. Damon is preparing to pick up the dagger when Alaric bursts in and says that they forgot about dessert. Andie takes Elijah off to the dining room and Alaric starts gesturing to the dagger. He writes a note and hands it to Damon telling him that the dagger will kill him if he uses it.
Jenna is having trouble with the dessert so she returns to the kitchen. Andie wants to ask Elijah a few questions about his work. She sends Alaric to get her notebook then goes to help him look for it. Elijah makes it clear to Damon and John they he is only allowing them to live to keep an eye on Elena. He is allowing her to live in her home and go about life with her friends as a courtesy. The moment that they become a liability, he’ll take Elena away and they’ll never see her again.
Just as Andie returns and starts to question him, Elijah is suddenly stabbed through the back with the dagger. Alaric pulls it out, tosses it onto the table and tells Damon to get rid of him before Jenna comes back with dessert.
Elena is upset because she feels like Stefan and Damon just keep lying to her. She wonders why Stefan has been telling her about his past. He says he’s been telling her about a time when he was giving up because that’s what she’s doing right now. Lexi wouldn’t let Stefan give up and he isn’t going to let her give up either.
Stefan and Lexi are walking among the soldiers again talking about feelings. She tells him it isn’t easy at first because you have to let everything back in. But once you can hurt, you can love and that’s the point.
Everything is intensified when you’re a vampire. When we hurt, we really hurt. But when we love…
Stefan says that Lexi showed him that day that there was a better way. And from that day on he’s fought for it, for his own survival. All he’s asking is for Elena to do the same.
Damon and Alaric put Elijah’s body into the cellar. Alaric says he thought there wasn’t going to be any violence that night. Damon points out that he wasn’t the one who did the killing. Alaric says he saw an opportunity and acted on it. It wasn’t because he planned for anything to happen while Jenna was in the house. He’s Damon’s friend, and Damon doesn’t have any of those, but the lying has to stop.
Elena has gone back to reading about the dagger when Stefan comes in to tell her that Elijah is dead. Alaric did it. She says that the Originals believed in trust and honor. It was forbidden for one vampire to take the life of another so the dagger was designed to take both lives at once. As long as the dagger stays in place, the Original is dead, for all intents and purposes. Stefan rushes to the phone. The next scene shows Damon arriving at an empty cellar. Elijah is at Jonas Martin’s demanding that he find Elena, now.
Jeremy and Bonnie are hanging out at his house practicing her spells. She isn’t sure yet about taking things further between them because she hasn’t talked to Elena about it, but she did like their kiss the night before. She is channeling fire. Jeremy asks if she could channel him. They decide to try. Bonnie places her hand on Jeremy’s chest and the door flies open.
Jonas Martin barges in and uses his powers to throw Jeremy against the wall. He wants to know what Luka told her. She says that she knows that Klaus has his daughter and she wants to help him get her back. Jonas grabs her face and tells her that what he’s doing is for her own good. He starts to chant and Bonnie begins to struggle and cry. He tells her she’ll have to answer to him if anything happens to Luka because of what she’s done. He leaves the house and Jeremy is released from the wall as the door closes.
Jeremy rushes to Bonnie and holds her. She’s crying and he asks her what’s wrong. She says that Jonas took her powers.
Elijah is standing outside the lake house. He picks up a handful of stones and throws them at the front door, breaking it in. Elena wants to go talk to him by herself. She assures Stefan that she’ll be safe because Elijah can’t come in the house. Elijah says he may not be able to come in, but he is a patient man and can wait them out. Elena tells him that she wants the same deal as before but he says she doesn’t have anything to negotiate with anymore. Elena pulls a knife out and asks how he’s going to lure Klaus to Mystic Falls after the doppleganger has bled to death. He says Stefan won’t let her do it. She agrees, Stefan will heal her with his blood, then she’ll kill herself, just like Katherine did.
Elena wants him to promise protection for her loved ones, even those that have hurt him. Elijah says he’s going to call her bluff. Elena drives the knife into her stomach. Elijah throws himself against the doorway, begging her to let him heal her. Elena agrees only if he gives his word on the deal. He does and she throws herself forward onto him, driving the dagger through his chest. Elijah collapses to the porch and Stefan rushes in to give Elena his blood to heal her. Damon steps around from inside the house and shares the information they all learned the hard way.
A little tip, don’t pull the dagger out.
Jenna is still upset with Alaric. He tries to act like nothing is wrong but she immediately asks about Isobel. He isn’t willing to give her a response and she takes that as her answer. A tear running down her cheek, she walks out. John comes in and says he could clear everything up about Isobel. Alaric takes off the ring and sits it on the counter. If John wants it, he can have it. After what he tried to pull with Damon, he’s going to need it worse.
Damon, Stefan and Elena put Elijah’s body back into the cellar. Damon retrieves the moonstone from his jacket. Elena tells them she’s willing to fight, but they’re going to do things her way. No more keeping things from her. Damon says she’s had a change of attitude and Stefan says he told her a story about someone who showed him a better way when he was making bad decisions. He asks if Damon remembers Lexi.
A final flashback, this time to Damon and Lexi. Damon is preparing to leave. Lexi tells him that the hatred he thinks he has under control is going to get the best of him one day. Without arguing, Damon simply asks her to help Stefan because he needs it. She says she will help him and then Damon leaves.
Back in present day, Damon opens the door to his room and hears the shower running. He calls out to Andie, surprised because he thought she’d left already. He’s shocked to find Katherine stepping out of his shower, asking for a robe. Damon played into her plan perfectly. She knew if she begged him not to kill Elijah that was exactly what he would do. While an Original can compel another vampire, as soon as the Original dies, the compulsion wears off. So she’s free now, but she kept her word and didn’t run. She’s going to stay and help him.
Wow. Another action-packed episode with more than a few twists and turns. Elijah is dead. Katherine is out of the tomb. Bonnie has lost her powers. Where will all these new developments lead?
