As a pet parent, we always want what is best for our Chihuahua(s). We provide the best beds, toys, blankets, treats and, of course, good food. As the owner of three darling Chihuahuas, I’d say they are a little spoiled . . . and they surely are. Do we remember the importance of water in their daily regimen? Plenty of clean fresh water daily is of utmost importance. The dog’s body is 70% water content and can survive with loss of fat and protein but even 1/10th of a loss of water can be fatal.
I have one Chihuahua who drinks excessively while another seems to be afraid of the water bowl! Coaxing your dog to drink more water will guarantee better health. Getting them to drink can sometimes be easier said than done. We have to be sure the water is always fresh. Stagnant water in a dogs bowl can allow for bacteria growth and debris. It is best to allow unlimited access such the continual water bowls, such as a water well type bowl. Some dogs may not want to drink as much if the water is not clean and fresh.
Water serves more purpose for our dogs than we realize. The dog deficient in proper water consumption will not function properly because
· Water helps to digest and absorb nutrients
· Water burns fuel which turns into energy
· Water helps to maintain normal body temperature
· Water replaces other body fluids that are lost through bodily secretions
· Water mixes with different types of chemicals in the body as they transform and dissolve into other chemical reactions
· Water carries nutrients to other cells of the body while excreting toxins from the body, allowing for proper elimination. Without water, these organs could not function properly.
· Water is necessary to regulate the blood’s acid level
As you can see, water is a crucial part of your dog’s diet. Always have plenty of clean fresh water ready and available for your dogs’ pleasure and needs.
Each dog varies as to their water needs daily. Just as with humans it can depend upon physical activities. A dog does not sweat but pants instead and needs more water. What type of food does your dog eat? If the primary food is a dry diet, your dog may need more water than if the food were a canned food or a homemade diet which is already moist. The dry dog foods contain only 10% moisture, meaning that your dog would need to consume about a quart of water per pound of the food.
If your dog ever gets ill, there is always a chance of dehydration. Encourage extra consumption of water, even if you have to add bouillon to the water to enhance the taste. Other ways you can get your dog to drink is to maybe offer an ice cube to lick, allow your dog to drink from your hand, with Vet approval, offer small amounts of Pedialyte and add ice cubes to the drinking water. Any of these special tricks may entice your dog to drink more water. All of us can live without food for a long period of time but not water.
