Most music fans knew they were in trouble in the first fifteen minutes of the 2011 Grammys last night with the scream-fest tribute to Aretha Franklin.
Other than the fact that the music industry awards shows spent more time immortalizing a singer who has not passed on, than they did Michael Jackson, would be enough.
Carrying it further to produce four women, three who screamed as opposed to sang, the tribute to Franklin, was tortuous. Most people assumed that Carrie Underwood was busy last night and Katy Perry and Lady Gaga turned down the invitation to perform in that segment.
The 2011 Grammy Awards presentation went so wrong on so many levels. First, one of the most boring songs won more Grammys than most, Need You Now, and the majority of performers brought more props than talent to the stage, except for Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith.
Where to begin with the lack of talent depends on how popular the artists on stage last night are. The following are not in any particular order in that sense:
With her red-haired wigs and lack of singing talent, Rhianna bordered on porn, with half her behind hanging out, shaking directly above the faces of the audience in the front row. That, and her hand down at her crotch for most of her second performance, makes people wonder what talent got her there, because singing ‘ain’t one of ’em’.
Most people, young and old alike, can agree that Lady Gaga has singing talent. What many Lady Gaga fans are not saying is that the circus freak show is wearing thin. Once Madonna starting wearing cones on her boobs, her hits were fewer and further between.
Speaking of Madonna, Lady Gaga’s new song sounds and feels like Madonna’s Express Yourself, and may be why the boring album won over hers last night. Just sing and skip the sideshow; is that too much to ask?
Bruno Mars, the guy with the monocle, and the chick with the bird’s nest planted on top of her head
People who are not familiar with these three performers, may very well believe that all three of them had colds, or the jitters on stage, or something else. The reason being is that not one of them seemed to be able to sing two words in tune, or sing them coherently.
Perry can sing and most people can agree on that, but last night as Randy Jackson loves to say, “She was pitchy”. Whether the music too loud, or something else malfunctioning, that caused the performers’ inability to hear themselves, something was going wrong last night for all of them on stage. It was like watching The Gong Show, without the Gong.
In addition, Katy Perry’s song, Teenage Dream, for a teen idol to sing to a generation with the highest number of teenage pregnancies in history, was not one of her better ideas.
Barbara Streisand (Speaking of The Gong Show)
When did Barbra Streisand lose her voice? Fans of Streisand singing may not agree with her political views and wish that she would keep them to herself, will at least admit that Streisand and a select few, Judy Garland for one, had talent they were born with, and could not be taught.
However, just as it so often happens with singers when they age, the voice goes along with the sight and hearing. Streisand looked uncomfortable, sounded horrible, and most sat in agony waiting for it to end.
Bob Dylan (did I mention agony already?)
Many people never thought Bob Dylan could sing, although some may have liked his anti-war, anti-everything songs back in the day, but that shtick is about as old as the freak show costumes. How could anyone have enjoyed the performance and moronic display of a man who appeared to have totally lost his mind?
It was almost as bad as the song, They’re Coming to Take Me Away. Dylan kept a stupid grin on his face throughout the performance, the backup singers were only making it worse, and the whole thing was a disaster.
Disaster #2 – Mick Jagger
Mick Jagger without the Rolling Stones and without the ability to pronounce one word legibly in his Grammy Awards Show performance was a train wreck and an avalanche in one. Singing what most assumed was a new song; the hype about his appearance was a huge disappointment.
While it was cute when she sang on Glee, last night’s performance with the clown doing a bad impersonation of Elton John was sad to witness from the one time Oscar winner.
Given the fact that those with any real talent did not win any awards, namely Adam Lambert and the cast of Glee, last night’s Grammy Awards Show was 3 and 1/2 hours of wasted time we will never get back.
In addition, everyone over the age of 21 would like the Grammy Awards officials to post several warnings at the beginning, and all throughout the show, next year.
