For all of those Christian fiction lovers out there in Norfolk, Va, when did you first fall in love with an Inspiring book? Was it when you were a child? When you were forced to read a “good book” or was it a CF in your favorite genre that you just had to grab? What is it that draw so many people to Christian Fiction and which seems to be popular in this Examiner’s opinion?
The first time I ever read a Christian Fiction was when my aunt saw the “other” books I was reading. You know the kind with the pirate on the front and a busty blonde or brunette on the cover looking as if she needed to be rescued. Then there were the really inappropriate books that spelled out everything a couple was doing in the love scenes. My aunt told me one day: “Read this. It’s a collection of the love stories you seem to like. You’ll love these” I was very young, probably 12 or thirteen but I knew I love to read words whether they were adult or young adult books-never mattered to me. The book she gave me I cannot find till this day, but it had Irene Hannon’s story inside there and a few other stories that had soft romance in there. I loved that huge pink book and reread it several times.
There are other categories of Christian Fiction and it keeps growing. Thankfully we have writers like Ted Dekker, Robin Parrish, and Dee Henderson to shake things up a bit with suspense, sci fi, and lots of mystery for those of us who crave that as well. In my opinion suspense novels are hugely popular but old fan favorites of Beverly Lewis and Janette Oke still buy their works plenty. Just look at the Bestseller’s Lists each day.
