Children can never have enough books! Boston and its surrounding suburbs have plenty of great places to explore and purchase children’s literature. Here are some options to try.
- New England Mobile Book Fair
Location: 82-84 Needham Street, Newton Highlands, MA 02461 (Exit 19A off of Route 128).
What to know: The New England Book Fair has an enormous collection of books that are all 20% off! If you get a loyalty card, each $30 you spend will earn you a stamp. At 12 stamps you get a $20 gift certificate.
Latest news: A new contest offers kids a chance to win prizes, including a lunch with Kevin Youkilis of the Boston Red Sox. They must write a 200 word essay and pledge to read four books. Just for entering, children win a free meal at California Pizza Kitchen in Wellesley.
- Wellesley Book Smith
Location: 82 Central Street, Wellesley, MA 02482.
What to know: This independent book store is known for its spectacular children’s department. Visitors can find new fiction and nonfiction or browse the Used Book Cellar. Storytime for children happens every Friday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Latest news: Beginning April 1st, children can come to a new storytime in their pajamas on Friday nights at 7:00 p.m.
- Children’s Book Shop
Location: 237 Washington Street, Brookline, MA 02445.
What to Know: This shop was established in 1977, making it the oldest independent book store in the Boston area. It now carries 28,000 titles. Community involvement is a major focus, and the shop offers annual teacher nights, providing teachers with a 20% discount, free posters, and extra hours to shop.
Latest news: Check the website or Facebook link to find out about the next author events. Also, a poetry contest is open to kids in April (National Poetry Month). K – 8 students can enter and winners will be announced in June with a special celebration.
- Porter Square Books
Location: Porter Square Shopping Center, 25 White Street, Cambridge, MA 02140 (Porter Square Shopping Center on Massachusetts Ave., two miles north of Harvard Square).
What to know: Porter Square Books has a special children’s section, where you can find children’s picks, staff picks for kids, and award winning books.
Latest news: A new program called Fresh Ink allows children ages 7 – 17 to read books before they are published. Publishers send Advanced Reader Copies for review, and now your children can help!
