Whole Foods Market’s Tips for Coffee You Count On
Parents waking after many sleepless nights come to appreciate small pleasures. A good cup of coffee in the morning is at the top of that list and is an essential part of many parents’ days. So, how do you make it the best cup possible as far as flavor? Can you also ensure a bit of social conciseness as you tip back the good gooey black? Whole Foods Market Northern California Coffee Coordinator, Winston Wheeler answers these questions and more.
Q. How connected is a coffee company to its taste and why?
Smaller companies rotate their selections more than larger companies so therefore have a variety in taste. Additionally, smaller/local companies typically have a lighter roast profile to really showcase the terrier. For example, why is Taylor Made a superior coffee choice? Tasting/enjoying coffee is really subjective – kind of like wine.
Q. How can a family get the best cup of coffee with home brewing options? (e.g. freshness, flavor, size of grounds, etc.) What brewing option is best? (e.g. French Press, cold press, coffee maker)
In general you will get the best cup of coffee via a French Press or single-cup filter drip. Always use fresh water and whole beans which you grind fresh daily before use. Here is our guide in making coffee: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/products/guide-coffee.php
Q. What can you tell me about caffeine in coffee? I’ve heard lighter beans mean more caffeine. How can I select a cup that tastes good and won’t get me jittery, yet still wakes me up?
Lighter beans do have more caffeine because they are not roasted as long as darker beans – the roasting process reduces the caffeine in all coffee. Picking the perfect cup that won’t make you jittery is going to be a personal choice – so experiment with multiple coffees to see which best works for you. That said, if you do have a favorite coffee that you feel is too strong, I recommend also buying the decaf version and doing a 50/50 blend so you get all the great flavor but not as much caffeine.
Q. What should I know about coffee growing and human rights? How can I be sure my morning wake up doesn’t come at another person’s expense?
Key labels you need to look for are: Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance Certified, Direct Trade or Whole Trade certified. All coffees sold at Whole Foods Market adhere to Whole Foods Market’s Quality Standards so customers can feel good about what they purchase.
