In an unexpected moment of gut-level honesty, Whoopi Goldberg revealed some graphic details of past addictions. On the February 2, 2011 episode of ABC’s The View, Whoopi commiserated regarding actor Charlie Sheen and his very public drug and alcohol issues. It was abundantly clear that Whoopi was both authentic and knowledgeable about drug addiction.
While the other ladies of The View were dropping their usual nuggets of wisdom, Whoopi disclosed that she had dropped nuggets of poop during her drug days. She gave a vivid description of an awakening experience while sitting on the side of her bed in her own urine and poop. A drug induced fear kept her from going to the bathroom which was only a few feet away.
Suffice it to say that her pearls of wisdom (or poop) carried much more weight than the other ladies of The View. Whoopi shared, “I was a functioning drug addict, I showed up for work because I knew a lot of people would be out of work and I wouldn’t get a check that I needed to buy my drugs.” She went on to say that Charlie Sheen must “make the decision that he’s ready and willing to stop doing what he’s doing… he’s not there yet.” It is being reported that Sheen has made a decision to go back to work on his television show Two and a Half Men, for now.
This episode of The View might have done more for Atlanta and the Nation as a whole, than any other of the more fluffy shows. While Charlie Sheen’s lovable antics on Two and a Half Men might provide loads of entertainment, Whoopi’s drug revelations could help Sheen and others reach some much needed sobriety.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located here in Atlanta, reports some statistics on illegal drug use as follows:
Percent of persons 12 years of age and over with any illicit drug use in the past month: 8.0% (2008)
- Percent of persons 12 years of age and over with marijuana use in the past month: 6.1% (2008)
- Percent of persons 12 years of age and over with any nonmedical use of a psychotherapeutic drug in the past month: 2.5% (2008)

Both Sheen and Whoopi have drug and alcohol addictions in their pasts, but apparently of the two, only Whoopi reached bottom, both literally and figuratively. All facetiousness aside, addiction is a serious problem as indicated in the CDC statistics above.
Whoopi Goldberg is only one of a few to have won an Oscar, a Tony, and an Emmy. During one period in the 1990’s, she was the highest-paid actress of all time. And amazingly, while she has been seen in over 150 films, she admitted on yesterday that she was addicted to drugs for a period or maybe two, during this time. The fact that she is now “straight as an arrow,” should give hope to many.
