Why you should let Google help plan your wedding and why they want to

by glow bass

So you’re planning a wedding? Wow, have I got the perfect thing for you. Check out Google, and I don’t mean just for caterers and florists. Google has put together a specialized set of apps and templates to help you figure out what you should be planning, how to plan it, and how to share it with everyone you know. It sounds silly at first, but the fact is it’s a fantastic idea.

My roommate has a wedding coming up. I would love to tell you more about the wedding, and by all rights I should be able to tell you more about it, but I don’t even know what month it will take place in. I don’t like listening to people plan weddings, so I always put on my iPod if I have to be in the same area when they talk about it. That doesn’t mean I don’t want her to have the wedding of her dreams, it just means I have two crappy divorces and don’t want to think about it. So here’s what is so wonderful about Google Weddings.

I practically live my life online. My Blackberry talks to my Google apps which talks to my PC (both Linux and Windows, I dual boot) and my two laptops (both different Linux distros) and end the end, I always know where I’m supposed to be when, and always have access to the documents I’m working on, not to mention always have my internet browser synced with every other computer so I never have to go looking for that website I use as a reference for that paper I was supposed to have done 2 days ago. All of those things work seamlessly because of Google apps. I used to worry about privacy, now I worry that my privacy concerns will get in the way of my real life access to Google. Google has the apps you need, and they’re taking those apps one step further so they can help people plan their wedding.

By putting the apps most likely to be used in planning and remembering a wedding, they’ve set up a base site that gives you access to a personalized website with Google Sites, photo editing and personalized announcements, save the date cards, etc. from Picnik, templates for guest lists, schedules, and budgets available in Google Docs that can be accessed from anywhere, and then they have Picasa Web Albums where you can share your engagement and wedding pictures, or gather photos of floral arrangements, dresses and other inspirations to show to your caterer or florist.

The truth is, it’s a great concept. If nothing else, the Google Docs templates will cut your work down. There are templates for;

  • Wedding planner
  • Address book
  • Guest list
  • Budget planner
  • To-do list
  • Seating chart
  • Reception menu
  • Music list

Since they can be edited and stored online, you can work on these from anywhere, anytime you have a few minutes. They’ll also be able to be shared with anyone you have helping you plan your wedding whether it’s your mother, your best friend or a wedding planning mother-in-law-to-be.

Websites for an upcoming wedding have been around for a very long time, but Google Sites makes it free, customizable, and easy to coordinate your Site theme with your Picnik theme you base your customized invites and save the date cards will be created with. This why you should let Google help you plan your wedding.

Here’s why Google wants to. The fact is, Google has more apps than people know what to do with and simply by making a site giving you a starting place for how to use them together is a fantastic way to get people using them. There are plenty of Google apps I’ve test-driven and not needed, but there are just as many if not more that I’ve played around with and found practically indispensable. The problem isn’t creating things people will need and want, it’s getting them to use them. The fact that they involved a professional wedding planner to help them create the templates and templates so that people have a direction to go in just makes the whole thing too good to not try.
