The kids and young at heart may not be the only folks getting a day off on Tuesday.
The Atlanta Thrashers may get the day off as well.
With the city struggling to recover from a snowstorm that dumped five to six inches of the white stuff around the team’s Duluth, Ga. practice facility, the Thrashers announced that their scheduled Tuesday practice was pushed back two hours to 12:00 p.m. – for now.
Atlanta will reassess whether the team, which is on an extended break until Friday night, will get the day off. This could happen if the roads in the Atlanta metropolitan area do not show improvement in time for practice.
Virtually all of the region’s schools were shut down for a second consecutive day after the January snowstorm wreaked havoc on the region. Many cars struggled to gain traction on the metro’s snow and ice covered roads and multiple tractor trailers jackknifed on the city’s interstates, forcing intermittent closures of all of the region’s main thoroughfares.
Those same roads were expected to ice up overnight as the temperature fell and intermittent freezing drizzle blanketed the region.
The Thrashers made it back to Atlanta after dropping a 4-3 overtime decision to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday. They were not scheduled to practice on Monday.
Fans are urged to check out the team’s practice schedule page before heading out to the facility.
Dawes gets nod: Former Thrashers left wing Nigel Dawes picked up the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week nod for the period ending Jan. 9. Dawes scored five goals and netted an assist and finished with a plus-4 rating in three games for the Chicago Wolves – Atlanta’s top farm team.
Dawes set a Wolves AHL franchise record by posting four goals in Chicago’s 9-3 win over the Toronto Marlies on Wednesday night and added another tally in the team’s 4-1 loss to the Hamilton Bulldogs.
The 5-foot, 200 pound Manitoba native appeared in six games with the Thrashers this season, sniping six shots and finishing with a minus-6 rating before getting reassigned to the Wolves on Oct. 22.
