By Rioja standards a Grand Reserva red is a wine that have been aged in oak barrels for 24 to 36 months, and 36 more months in bottle. Prices range from $18 and up. Gran Reserva wines are usually refine and complex, only exceptional vintages can make such a wine. This wine is known for its intense deep berries, cherries, vanilla and wood aromas and offers the same in the palate with hints of cedar and lanolin. This wine is not from Rioja, is from the less known Valdepeñas DO.
Bodegas Navalon was established at Valdepeñas in the early 1900’s by Don Juan Sánchez and winemaking is been the passion of this family for few generations. Winemaker Alfonzo J. Muñoz continues the tradition of producing, oak aged Spanish red wines that are released when they are ready to be drink. The Anciano Gran Reserva is made with Tempranillo grapes from vines over 25 years old, aged in French and American oak for at least 24 months. After bottling the wine is laid to rest at the Bodega’s cellar and released ten years following vintage.
Valdepeñas is a Spanish DO (Denominación de Origen) located within the province of “Ciudad Real” in the Southern end of The Castilla-La Mancha region. It is surrounded by another DO (La Mancha) but is been able to maintain is status as an independent DO due to the production of distinct style of wine known as aloque or clarete which is made by mixing white and red grapes. The climate in this region is continental (cold winters and hot, dry summers) and the soil is clay with high lime content.
2000 Bodegas Navalon Valdepeñas Anciano Gran Reserva: (100% Tempranillo) This well crafted and mature wine has an expressive bouquet of dark cherry, Middle Eastern spices (cinnamon, cloves) and smoked paprika with notes of lavender, cedar and licorice. On the palate this wine feels medium-bodied with silky textured tannins, offers nice acidity and moderate alcohol. You can enjoy flavors of slightly tart cherry, cranberry, cloves and vanilla with earthy notes and a medium savory finish. After tasting this wine for three days it showed that is very well balanced and integrated. This Tempranillo will pair with a great variety of food: chicken or beef fajitas, pizza, grilled meats (chicken, pork or beef), your favorite burgers, pasta on red sauce, “patatas bravas”, pork/ chicken tamales and mild cheeses.
