The West Chester University women’s basketball team managed a convincing 65-34 win over a rebuilding East Stroudsburg squad yesterday afternoon, despite an off day by two of the Golden Rams’ leading scorers.
The Warriors (4-10, 1-1 PSAC East) dressed only nine players, only two of whom were juniors. The rest of the squad of freshmen and sophomores showed their inexperience as the Golden Rams (11-3, 2-0 PSAC East) maintained a share of the PSAC East lead with Bloomsburg, who defeated Kutztown 87-84 yesterday.
East Stroudsburg did manage an early lead in the first couple of minutes, as a Nicole Hill foul shot gave the Warriors a 3-2 lead. Mary Kate Serratelli responded with a three pointer to give the Rams the lead for good. It wasn’t until West Chester went on a 19-7 run that the game became out of reach for a Warrior team that had been humiliated by Indiana (Pa.) 86-18 last weekend.
West Chester took a 33-21 lead into halftime, as the backcourt duo of Allison Hostetter and Megan Stewart combined went 1-for-9 from the field in the first half for four points (Hostetter’s points came from the foul line) in a rare off day for two of the league’s leading scorers. However, Alex Lennon went 5-for-5 from the field in the first half while Dominique Adams hit a pair of three pointers to pick up the slack for the Rams.
“She’s very skilled. She’s a little frail, but she’s got great hands,” West Chester head coach Deirdre Kane said of the sophomore from Lansdowne. “She’s only going to get better when she gets stronger.”
“They’re going to be all over her, she’s going to have to respond it,” Kane added.
“I feel a lot more comfortable, and that comes with success,” Lennon said. “That definitely helps. My teammates definitely helped me improve from last season to this season.”
The Rams, however, despite defeating East Stroudsburg by 31, kept the game’s final result reasonable; most of the regular starters were on the bench in the second half. All 14 of West Chester’s players on the active roster saw some playing time.
“I was thrilled at how unselfish they could play,” Kane said of her reserves. “They’re playing behind good kids.”
Lennon missed a double-double with 17 points on 8-for-8 shooting, 9 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 3 steals in 22 minutes. Hostetter finished with 7 points, while Stewart finished with 4 points. Ambreelinne Ortman added 9 points and 5 rebounds off the bench for West Chester.
Mia Waring led East Stroudsburg with 10 points off the bench.
