Miami, February 21, 2011. Theatre Chat has just received exciting breaking theatre news for Florida. Zoetic Stage Company Member Michael McKeever has two South Florida-premiered plays published. South Florida playwright and Zoetic Stage co-founder and company member Michael McKeever is having two of his successful comedies 37 Postcards and Suite Surrender published this year by Playscripts, Inc. 37 Postcards is already available for purchase now and Suite Surrender will be released later this year. Both plays had their world premieres in South Florida. 37 Postcards was originally workshopped and produced at New Theatre under the Artistic Directorship of Rafael de Acha. The play premiered in 1998 and is still being produced in theatres all across North America and Europe. Suite Surrender had its world premiere at Caldwell Theatre Company in 2008 under the Artistic Directorship of Michael Hall. Suite Surrender is currently running throughout Germany and two new productions are scheduled in Ohio and Pennsylvania this year.
This good news comes hot-off-the-heals of Zoetic Stage’s incredibly successful and critically acclaimed production of South Beach Babylon by McKeever in December of 2010. Zoetic Stage’s production of South Beach Babylon was ineligible for South Florida’s Carbonell Award Consideration due to the organization’s rules on new professional theatre companies. That didn’t stop McKeever from being nominated for a Carbonell award this year. His play Unreasonable Doubt is nominated for Best New Work. Unreasonable Doubt had its world premiere at Actors’ Playhouse in Coral Gables. McKeever has stiff competition for the Carbonell trophy as fellow Zoetic Stage co-founder Chris Demos Brown’s controver- sial new play When the Sun Shown Brighter is also nominated. When the Sun Shone Brighter received its world premiere at Florida Stage in the spring of 2010.
Stuart Meltzer, Zoetic Stage’s Artistic Director says about McKeever’s plays: “Michael is the people’s playwright. He writes about people we know or would love to know, about ourselves and about our everyday struggles. He is not a political playwright. He is a hu- morist that can delve deep and a serious writer that can make any audience laugh.” McKeever has also been awarded the 2011 State of Florida Individual Artist Fellowship. The honor is a $5,000 grant given for excellence in playwriting. In the ensuing weeks, Zoetic Stage will announce exciting plans for the remainder of their inaugural season.
